Elizabeth Warren's '11 commandments of progressivism' would make Karl Marx proud

We at Poor Richard’s News would like to thank Elizabeth Warren for reminding us again why progressivism sucks. She recently gave a speech in which she listed what she calls “The 11 Commandments of Progressivism” (I call it the “Anti-Bill-of-Rights”, but whatever. Pot-ay-to, Pot-ah-to). As you…

Let it not be said that no one cared

I was going to put this in the tags, but fuck it.
This sort of thing happens here because anyone over the age of 18 can buy a gun, which means everyone in this country has some way of accessing a firearm. What the U.S. has to do is ban private gun ownership (except in cases where people need it for survival, i.e. to kill animals for food), or at least put more restrictions on it, because literally every other country that’s done that has seen a huge decrease in violent crimes.
And that’s not even mentioning lower suicide rates, an issue that is brought up far too infrequently in the discussion about gun control. “Criminals will get access to firearms anyway, legal or not.” Fine. But is your desire to own a firearm really more important than the lives of roughly twenty thousand Americans in one year? That’s almost half of all suicides in the entire country.
I’m not even going to go into the inherently racist nature of gun culture because I don’t think I can speak well enough on it, but people seem to believe that a white person with a firearm is “protecting themselves”, while a POC with a firearm is “dangerous.” It’s perpetuating a culture of violence against minorities.
And to people who jump on the second amendment, take a second to read the text:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The second amendment was created so that the people could form a militia, which could then be used to take down an unjust government. The second amendment extends the right to own a gun specifically to those in said militia. Now, I don’t know about you, but I can’t imagine any case nowadays where a group of men with firearms would be able to take down the government, nor even get a chance. Our country has grown to the point where the second amendment is relevant as a historical text and context, but not as a modern practice. The United States has a standing army, and spends more money on its defense budget than the next eight countries put together. Last time I checked, it’s illegal to go out and shoot a politician (or anyone, for that matter). If a corrupt system is to be taken down, it’s most likely going to be taken down by the media, not by individuals with guns. But all too often I hear cries for a decrease in gun laws and an increase in media censorship.
There are so many things wrong with how gun ownership and regulation are taken care of in this country. That’s what is causing the violence.
But it’s so much easier to blame mental illness, isn’t it?

You have attempted to sound intelligent without doing any research whatsoever. Good job. I’m going to ram your argument into the ground.
Anyone over the age of 18 in the United States can buy a firearm, after undergoing a federally mandated mental health and criminal background check. It’s called the NICS system, and it’s run by the FBI. As for ‘more restrictions’ there are literally thousands of state and federal firearms laws on the books, including the 1934 National Firearms Act, 1968 Gun Control Act, 1986 Firearms Owners Protection Act, and 1992 Brady Law. From 1994 to 2004, there was a ban on the sale of ‘assault weapons’. The United States has stricter firearms import laws than Canada, France, or New Zealand. It’s easier to get a gun in the first and last of those two countries than it is in New York, California, Connecticut, or Illinois. How do I know this?

Yeah, that’s right, I’m Canadian. The rifle on your left is a semi-automatic. I legally owned this rifle before I turned 18 because of a special license that allows minors to buy ammunition and be gifted rifles and shotguns. Once you get your easy-to-acquire firearms license, no further background checks are required for long gun purchases, which aren’t registered. Your ‘rest of the world’ comparison is hilariously inaccurate given that the Swiss, French, Finns, New Zealanders, Slovenians, Czechs, Germans, and Canadians are allowed to own the same sort of stuff Americans do, for the most part. Even if that wasn’t the case, gun control hasn’t been correlated to lower gun crime; look at Brazil, Russia, Mexico, and South Africa, where it’s immeasurably difficult to buy firearms legally, if not impossible.
As someone who has been depressed, and has thought about suicide at a darker point in my life, I wouldn’t let not having a gun stop me if I really desired to end my life. Japan has a massive suicide rate, regardless of their ban on firearms. Banning guns isn’t going to stop people from committing suicide.
"Racist nature of gun culture" Son, the first gun control laws put in place, such as the Army and Navy laws, were written to keep firearms out of the hands of poor former slaves, freedmen, and immigrants. The Black Codes almost constantly prohibited African Americans from possessing firearms or ammunition. The 1968 Gun Control Act and 1986 Firearms Owners Protection Act were written to keep firearms out of the hands of the Black Panthers. Martin Luther King was denied a firearms carry permit because of his race, despite having an arsenal in his home. Malcolm X told PoC to arm themselves, as the police either refused to protect them, or actively struck out at them. Millions of PoC own firearms across the United States and Canada. Don’t pull the ‘racist gun owners’ card because trust me, historically, gun control proponents have done far more to restrict the freedoms of PoC than gun owners ever have.
You want to claim the Second Amendment was written for a militia? How about we ask the people who wrote it.
"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."- George Mason, co-author of the Second Amendment, during Virginia’s Convention to Ratify the Constitution, 1788.
"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the Press, or the rights of Conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms; …"- Samuel Adams, quoted in the Philadelphia Independent Gazetteer, August 20, 1789, “Propositions submitted to the Convention of this State”
"The great object is that every man be armed." and "Everyone who is able may have a gun."- Patrick Henry.
"The people are not to be disarmed of their weapons. They are left in full posession of them."- Zachariah Johnson. Elliot’s Debates, vol. 3 "The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adoption of the Federal Constitution."
I’ll take the word of the people who literally wrote the US Bill of Rights over yours.
As for the claim that the US Military is undefeatable in it’s current state, I’d hedge a bet that the Taliban, Iraqi insurgents, and Vietcong would disagree with you. War isn’t always two armies smashing into each other, nor is it always won by who has more tanks, planes, or helicopters. A tank can’t conduct search warrants. A tank is an awful vehicle for urban engagements. A tank isn’t that great for patrolling. Infantry, law enforcement, and the like do the grunt work in asymmetric warfare, and if the Taliban, illiterate goat-herders with bolt-action rifles and half-century old AKs can drown the United States government in debt and create enough public war weariness to end the conflict, I’d figure that highly-educated Americans, with possible combat experience and semi-modern equipment could fight a costly guerrilla war. Your understanding of military strategy, determined by that comment alone, is World War Two era at best, and eve then, resistance forces cost the Nazis thousands of tons of supplies, thousands of men, and months of diverting resources away from the front to fight scattered militias.
You’re right. It is easy to blame mental illness. It’s also easy to blame guns. You can’t ban a person with a mental illness, and even if you wanted to, most mentally ill people aren’t a threat to anyone. But, you’re taking the same road. If you want to make a serious dent in gun violence in the United States, perhaps you should do a little work towards dealing with poverty, access to education, and access to jobs that provide a living wage. If you want to curb mass shootings, work towards telling the news to stop making every single spree killer famous.
Trust me. Banning guns won’t do jack shit.
The importance of Political Language

Progressives realize that whoever controls the language in a debate controls the debate; Conservatives do not. Conservatives, for example, simply repeat after Liberals when they refer to “the immigration debate”. “Immigration” has not in fact been widely debated in this country for a great many…

Give me a reason you don’t like Obama that isn’t some veil for your racism against him and his family.

Well let’s see, I’m against America policing the world, unwarranted spying on Americans, massive government stimulus, indefinite detention and the suspension of due process, and the illegal bombings of countries we have not signed a declaration of war against.

Reblog if you support the 2nd amendment

Anonymous asked ashley "I 100% agree with your stance on abortion. I don't see how people can't see it as murder. Even my atheist friend is pro-life because she can't fathom how these pro-choicers believe babies magically are granted some sort of soul that gives them personhood ONLY after they're born, and we rely on decisions of "personhood" in order to choose who gets the right to live? Life is life. Abortion ends a life. No one should have the "right" to choose who lives and who dies. That's not our decision to make"

I dont understand how in 2014 it even an issue?! we have all the technology and scientific proof we need! these are human beings same as us! it just goes to show how far we are willing to go for the sake of our own selfish desires. its sickening.
